Grapes
Malvasia Puntinata and Bombino bianco are the typical grapes of Lazio and in particular of the vineyards in the Frascati area.
Malvasia Puntinata is a grape of great potential, thanks to its ability to concentrate sugars, and for this it is possible to find sweet wines obtained after drying. It is a fairly delicate and disease-prone grape, which makes cultivation and health difficult. In the Castelli Romani area, a project to replant this grape is underway to make it more resistant. It is often confused with Malvasia di Candia, which however has a considerably lower quality.
Bombino Bianco is a typical grape of the Foggia area (Puglia), but widely cultivated throughout southern Italy; finds in the Castelli Romani area a good territory, limestone and siliceous. The Bombino Bianco wine is used as a blending wine for wines with weaker alcohol.
Disciplinary
The Frascati DOCG was established in 2011; DOCG wines must have no less than 70% of Malvasia grapes (Candia or Puntinata), and the remaining 30% of Bombino Bianco, Bellone, Trebbiano, Greco, and an alcohol content of 12 °. In the Superior version, the alcohol content must be no less than 13 °.
